Many thanks again to listener Bob! Just a few photos of the Pozieres area. The view from the Windmill really shows the flat farmland all around. Many times the Australians had to move to their trenches over this ground in daylight, and in full view of the Germans.

On the 23rd of July, 1916, the Australians of the 1st ANZAC Corps attacked the village of Pozieres on the left of Bazentin Ridge. The Diggers had arrived on the Somme.
